Practical Magic Books in Order: Alice Hoffman's Owens Family Series for Sandra Bullock Fans

If you watched Sandra Bullock in Practical Magic over Halloween, you already know the Owens women. What you might not know is that the 1998 film is only a small slice of a much bigger story. If you’ve been looking for what to read after the movie, start here.
Alice Hoffman's Owens family series has four books: Practical Magic, The Rules of Magic, Magic Lessons, The Book of Magic. That’s four books spanning four centuries of Owens witches, from the 1600s to the present day.
The tricky part is the reading order. You can either read them in the order of publishing or the story actually unfolds.
So, here's the reading order, what the films changed, and which book to start with.
Table of Contents
Practical Magic books in order
- Practical Magic (1995 ) – Sally and Gillian Owens as adults (the 1998 film)
- The Rules of Magic (2017) – Prequel: Aunts Franny and Jet, and their brother Vincent, in 1960s New York
- Magic Lessons (2020) – The very beginning: Maria Owens and the origin of the curse, in the 1600s
- The Book of Magic (2021) – The finale: every generation teams up to break the curse
Story order: Magic Lessons → The Rules of Magic → Practical Magic → The Book of Magic.
Which book should you start with?
Honestly, start with Practical Magic. It's the book behind the film, and the later books are richer once you know the Owens house and the curse.
If the aunts were your favourite part, go straight to The Rules of Magic. It's warm (but sad), and it shows why Franny and Jet ended up the way they are.
Magic Lessons is the darkest. It's a witch-trial story, so don't go in expecting midnight margaritas. The Book of Magic ties everything up nicely, though it may feel rushed to get to the ending. Read it last, whichever order you choose.
Practical Magic: the book vs the Sandra Bullock film
The 1998 film keeps the basic story: two sisters, a love curse and a dangerous ex who won't stay dead. But it changes a lot around that.
- The aunts. In the film, Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest are front and centre. In the novel, the aunts are mostly distant figures until late in the book.
- Sally's daughters. Antonia and Kylie are small children on screen. In the book they're teenagers with whole storylines of their own, and Kylie gets a lot of the page time.
- Where they live. The film keeps everyone in the old Massachusetts house. In the book, Sally moves her girls to the suburbs to escape magic, and it doesn't work.
- The ending. The big possession scene, with the town's women joining hands, was made up for the film. The book ends more quietly.
Is Practical Magic 2 based on a book?
Yes. Practical Magic 2 is based on The Book of Magic. Susanne Bier directs, Akiva Goldsman wrote the script, and Bullock and Nicole Kidman return as Sally and Gillian. Channing, Wiest, Joey King and Maisie Williams are in it too.
It opened in US cinemas in September 2026 to mixed reviews (36% on Rotten Tomatoes). You can rent it for $19.99 or buy it for $24.99 on Prime Video and Apple TV. It’s available since 13 October.
4K, Blu-ray and DVD come out on 1 December 2026. There's no confirmed HBO Max date yet. Forbes guesses around 27 November, but that's that; only a guess.

FAQs about Practical Magic books
Q. What order should I read the Practical Magic books in?
Publication order is Practical Magic (1995), The Rules of Magic (2017), Magic Lessons (2020) and The Book of Magic (2021). Story order runs Magic Lessons, The Rules of Magic, Practical Magic, then The Book of Magic. Either way, read The Book of Magic last, because it's the finale that ties all four generations together.
Q. Is Practical Magic 2 based on a book?
Yes. Practical Magic 2 is based on Alice Hoffman's 2021 novel The Book of Magic, the fourth and final Owens family book. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman play Sally and Gillian again, Susanne Bier directs, and Akiva Goldsman wrote the script for Warner Bros.
Q. Is the Practical Magic book different from the movie?
Quite a bit. In the novel, Sally's daughters are teenagers with big storylines. The aunts stay mostly in the background and Sally moves the family to the suburbs. The 1998 Sandra Bullock film puts the aunts front and centre, makes the girls young children, and adds a dramatic possession ending that isn't in the book.
Q. Do I need to read Practical Magic before The Rules of Magic?
No. The Rules of Magic is a prequel set in the 1960s, so you can read it first. It follows the aunts Franny and Jet when they were young. I'd still recommend starting with Practical Magic if you came from the film, because the prequel's emotional payoffs hit harder when you already know where the aunts end up.
Q. Where can I watch Practical Magic 2 in the US and India?
As of 2 November 2026, US viewers can rent it for $19.99 or buy it for $24.99 on Prime Video and Apple TV. 4K, Blu-ray and DVD come out on 1 December 2026. No HBO Max date has been confirmed. In India, no OTT release date has been announced yet.
