AO3 vs FanFiction.net: Is AO3 Down, and Where Should You Read Instead?

Yes, AO3 (Archive of Our Own) is down. It has been offline since 29 October 2026 after a security incident and was still down on 1 November 2026. The team's estimate is two to four weeks, and nobody has confirmed a return date.

While you wait, FanFiction.net is the obvious place to go. It's older and simpler than AO3, though, and for most readers it's a downgrade. I've set out the full comparison below.

Why AO3 is down and when it might be back

Here's the timeline from the official OTW status page (all times UTC):

  • 29 October, 07:13: AO3 went down for planned maintenance.
  • 29 October, 17:41: The estimate grew to about two weeks, possibly up to 4 weeks.
  • 30 October, 01:27: The team said it had detected evidence of a security incident on AO3.

Counting two to four weeks from 29 October puts a return somewhere between roughly 12 and 26 November 2026. AO3 may come back read-only or with some features missing, and it could go offline again during recovery. Nothing can be said for sure.

Your data: what to do now

  • Nothing has been deleted. The Organization for Transformative Works (OTW) says all works, bookmarks, kudos and comments are safe.
  • Some data may have been exposed. The OTW doesn't believe the user database was stolen but can't rule it out. That database may hold usernames, email addresses, IP addresses and hashed passwords. AO3 doesn't collect real names anyway, and donor data is kept on a separate system.
  • Change your password on any other site where you reused your AO3 password. A password manager makes this much easier.

OTW has clarified that this isn't connected to the recent PHP vulnerabilities, because AO3 runs on Ruby on Rails.

AO3 vs FanFiction.net: side by side

 AO3FanFiction.net
TaggingFree-form tags tidied by volunteer wranglers, plus ratings and archive warningsFixed categories: fandom, up to two genres, characters and rating
SearchStrong. You can include or exclude tags, filter by word count, sort by kudos and moreBasic filters. Finding niche fics is harder
Content rulesVery permissive, with content marked by ratings and warningsStricter. Explicit (MA) content isn't allowed by its guidelines
AppNo official app. It runs in a mobile browserHas an official app, and the new.fanfiction.net site reportedly syncs with it
Kindle downloadsBuilt-in EPUB, AZW3, MOBI, PDF and HTML downloadsNo built-in download, so you need third-party tools
SizeOver 18.47 million works in more than 82,900 fandomsBig back catalogue, strongest for older fandoms

404 Media calls FanFiction.net much more bare-bones. AO3 is better for readers who want to find exactly what they're in the mood for. However, if you love an older fandom, such as Harry Potter or Naruto, FanFiction.net has years of gems.

Other AO3 alternatives

  • Wattpad: readers can comment line by line, and it suits younger readers and original fiction.
  • Tumblr: some authors are sharing PDFs of their fics there.
  • SpaceBattles and Sufficient Velocity: forums for long, serialised fic.
  • Inkitt and Quotev: smaller, but both are active.

How to save fics to your Kindle next time

This outage is a good reminder to keep offline copies of the fics you love. Once AO3 is back, open a work, tap Download and choose EPUB. Then send the file to your Kindle with Amazon's Send to Kindle tool. If you're new to reading this way, my guide on whether you need a Kindle to read Amazon ebooks covers the basics.

Can fanfiction lead to indie publishing?

Yes, but only if you make the story your own first. You can't sell fic set in someone else's copyrighted world on Kindle Direct Publishing.

Many writers rework their characters and setting into original fiction instead. The Love Hypothesis started out as Star Wars fanfiction, and Fifty Shades of Grey began as Twilight fic. One more thing: AO3's doesn't allow commercial promotion, so don't put Patreon or book links inside your works.

FAQs about AO3 vs FanFiction.net

Q. Is AO3 down right now?

Yes. AO3 has been offline since 29 October 2026, when planned maintenance turned into an investigation of a security incident. It was still down on 1 November 2026. The team estimates two to four weeks of downtime, and it may bring back a limited or read-only version sooner.

Q. Was AO3 hacked, and is my email leaked?

The OTW confirmed it found evidence of a security incident. It doesn't believe the user database was stolen but can't rule it out. That database may contain usernames, email addresses, IP addresses and hashed passwords. AO3 doesn't collect real names, and donor data is held on a separate system. Treat your data as possibly exposed, not confirmed leaked.

Q. Should I change my AO3 password?

AO3 is offline, so you can't change your password there yet. What matters now is to change your password on every other site where you reused your AO3 password, because hashing can't fully protect weak or reused passwords. Use a password manager to create unique passwords. Once AO3 is back, change your password there too.

Q. Are my AO3 fics, bookmarks and kudos lost?

No. OTW says no data was deleted. All works, bookmarks, kudos and comments are safe and should be there when the site comes back. Some features may be missing at first if AO3 returns in read-only mode, so don't panic if you can't post or comment straight away.

Q. Is FanFiction.net a good AO3 alternative?

It works for now, especially for older fandoms with big back catalogues. It's more basic than AO3, though. Its tagging and search are limited, it doesn't allow explicit MA content, and there are no built-in downloads. It does have an official app. Wattpad, Tumblr, SpaceBattles and Sufficient Velocity are other options while AO3 is offline.
