How Patrick Stewart died

His spokesperson, Kelly Bush Novak, confirmed his death, and his family shared a statement on his social media. It said he died after a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer's Disease and Lewy Body Dementia, in the loving care of his beloved wife Sunny (Sunny Ozell, whom he married in 2013). Neither diagnosis had been made public before, CBS News reports.

What is Lewy body dementia?

Lewy body dementia is caused by abnormal clumps of protein, called Lewy bodies, building up in the brain. Common signs are fluctuating alertness, visual hallucinations and Parkinson's-like movement issues.

It can happen alongside Alzheimer's disease, and the family's statement suggests that was the case here. The Alzheimer's Society was one of the many groups that paid tribute.

"A man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love." Sir Ian McKellen, on Instagram

Marvel Studios called him "a singular talent, a generous collaborator, and a true gentleman," and Kevin Feige called him "brilliant, charming, warm, generous."

Time and Variety have collected many more, including tributes from William Shatner, George Takei, Hugh Jackman and Jonathan Frakes.

Patrick Stewart's books and audiobooks: where to start

His memoir: Making It So (2023)

Making It So came out in 2023 and became a New York Times best-seller. It follows him from his birth in Mirfield, West Riding of Yorkshire, on 13 July 1940, to an amateur drama group at 12 and a scholarship to Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

It also covers his 14 years at the Royal Shakespeare Company (where he was in more than 60 productions) and his years as Jean-Luc Picard (7 seasons, 178 episodes and 4 films of The Next Generation) and as Professor Charles Xavier in X-Men.

He narrates the audiobook himself, so if you like memoirs read by their authors, that is the version to look for.

If you'd like to borrow a copy, look for the Kindle Unlimited badge first. My guide to Kindle Unlimited and Kindle+ explains how that works. Libraries are another option, and many offer audiobooks through apps like Libby.

If you like celebrity memoirs in general, others on the same shelf include Jennette McCurdy's I'm Glad My Mom Died and Richard Branson's Finding My Virginity.

Other books and audiobooks

  • Patrick Stewart Performs the Complete Sonnets of William Shakespeare (2026): an audiobook of all 154 sonnets, and a way to hear him in the Shakespeare he trained and worked in at the RSC.
  • Peter and the Wolf: his narration won a Grammy for Best Spoken Word Album for Children.
  • Dickens's A Christmas Carol: his one-man stage show won an Olivier Award in 1994. With December coming, the book itself is a way to revisit that work.

What's still to come: his final film role

He returns as Professor X in Avengers: Doomsday, which opens in December 2026. He also voices Sir Ritchfield in The Sheep Detectives (2026). Rest in peace, Sir Patrick.

If you pick up one of his books this week, I'd be glad to hear which one in the comments.
