Then She Came Along by Neha Ranadive had me hooked from the first line. This rom-com serves up a vibrant, laugh-out-loud story that doesn’t take itself too seriously. A cheeky and fun romance with a dash of comedy. It’s bold and downright hilarious.

What’s Then She Came Along About?

Meet Manikarnika (aka Mani), a single, 35-year-old journalist and copywriter. She wants to be a single mom (having conception through IVF). That’s until a run-in with her childhood crush, Jimm Matthew, turns her life upside down, leading her into an unexpected pregnancy.

The book takes us through Mani’s rollercoaster of decisions, dilemmas, and downright absurd moments, all set against the backdrop of her uncle Ali and, of course, Jimm.

“No Ali, I heard him masturbate inside the toilet, […] I found some of his discarded semen lying on the floor, and I thought […] what would happen if I put some of it inside me.”

Sounds cheeky? The entire story is.

It’s not your typical rom-com filled with lovey-dovey moments. This is more of a chaotic, hilarious ride through Mani’s life as she battles her intrusive thoughts, sticky situations, and those 'what the f---' moments that make you both cringe and laugh.

What Makes It Fun?

The humor. Neha Ranadive’s writing is sharp, cheeky, and filled with real-life banter. Mani is the queen of awkward, and her internal thoughts are just as chaotic as the situations she gets herself into. It’s hard not to chuckle as she maneuvers through some of the most ridiculous yet oddly relatable moments.

The author doesn’t waste time on unnecessary details. It’s all about real talk, lively situations, and filmy dialogues that bring the characters to life. Neha has a knack for keeping the writing light, with analogies that make the scenes visual and the humor feel natural.

Here are some examples that had me cracking up:

  • “You’re like a cat drinking stolen milk with its eyes closed, thinking no one can see it…”
  • “She looked rather ravishing in that beetroot colored dress, like a healthy salad to be ravished before the main course…”
  • “Their eyes interlocked like opponents of some wrestling showdown match.”

The Downsides...

It’s not all perfect. While most of the book flows well, the Epilogue felt rushed. After the enjoyable ride through Mani’s misadventures, it didn’t quite match the vibe of the rest of the book. It was like hitting the brakes a little too suddenly.

Also, a few parts might come off as a bit cringy for some, but nothing over the top. It’s all in line with the light-hearted tone of the story.

To Read or Not To?

If you’re in the mood for a fun, no-strings-attached read with cheeky humor, Then She Came Along is perfect. It’s a refreshing, feel-good story without being bogged down with melodrama or sappy romance. Instead, it serves up plenty of laughs and relatable moments, especially for those in their 30s navigating life’s odd twists.

Final Thoughts

Then She Came Along was a delightfully cheeky read with a vibrant main character and a story that keeps you giggling throughout. It’s not heavy on romance, but that’s not the point—the fun, awkward, and downright hilarious moments make this book worth the read.
