Writing, Publishing, and Lessons Learned - A Chat with Sarita Pahuja

Every book has a story behind the story. Today, I’m sitting down with Sarita Pahuja, the mind behind It’s Always Been You, to talk about the inspiration, the writing process, and the journey of bringing this book to life. From her biggest challenges to her proudest moments – this article is packed with insights for readers and aspiring writers alike!
Let’s dive in!
1. Tell us a little about yourself.
I’m a software developer by profession, so I spend my days wrangling code. Yeah, not the most exciting thing. That’s why I read, mostly romance and fantasy, and trust me, I love being a reader. And with It’s Always Been You, now, I’m an author as well.
Besides that, I’m obsessed with mountains and hiking, so when I’m not coding, reading, or writing, I’m off escaping to the mountains!
2. Ohkayy, pitch your book in one or two sentences.
It’s Always Been You is an enemies-to-lovers, second-chance sports romance. It starts off fun and lighthearted, until it breaks your heart at 50%. It is packed with wit, romance, and heartwarming moments.
3. Mmhmm, what kind of readers would love this book?
It’s Always Been You is perfect for readers who love:
- Enemies-to-lovers with sizzling tension and banter
- Second-chance romance filled with longing and unresolved feelings
- Sports romance featuring a determined heroine and a swoon-worthy athlete
- Emotional rollercoasters: Fun and flirty at first, but heartbreakingly deep
- Witty banter and heartfelt moments that make you laugh, swoon, and maybe even cry
4. Now, let’s get a little personal. What’s the story behind your story?
As a romance reader, I wanted to write a story in my own way, one that I’d personally love to read. This story has bits and pieces of my own life woven into it, making it even more special. That’s why it warms my heart when reviewers call it a “real romance kinda story that could happen to anybody.”
5. Wow. Okay, indie publishing is quite a journey! How has the ride been for you?
Being a debut author is tough, especially when you have no idea how publishing works. I had so many doubts! I initially wanted to go the traditional route, but a fellow author warned me that traditional publishers take ownership of your book and have the right to tweak your story their way. I didn’t want that, especially for my first book. I wanted my characters, plot, and story to stay exactly as I originally wrote them.
But self-publishing came with its own challenges: finding an editor, a publisher to assist with the process, and artists for the cover was a long, chaotic ride. Still, I did it. And that journey, as overwhelming as it was, shaped me for the better. Now, as I am experienced, I know I’ll break through the obstacles I faced this time when I publish my next book.
6. Every book has that one scene or character that sticks with the author. What’s yours?
Let me share one of my favourite scenes from the book. Honestly, all the date and confession scenes hold a special place in my heart, but there’s one elevator scene that really stands out. In it, Sierra (our female character) and Derek (our male character) are in a crowded lift when a guy tries to touch her. Even though Derek and Sierra are enemies at this point, Derek steps up and says to the guy, “Do you want your hand broken? Because I’ll happily do it right here in this lift. Move it to the far left because if you know what’s good for you.”
Why is this my favourite? Because (smirks) it actually happened to me in real life! From the moment I started writing this story, I couldn’t wait to include this scene. And trust me, it’s become readers' favourite too!
7. Hahaha, that’s lovely. What part of this book gave you the hardest time to write?
I had a really tough time with the timeline of the book, especially since the story is set in Seattle. I had to reach out to my friends who live in the USA and other countries and do a lot of research on the culture, seasons, college timelines, clothing, food… basically everything that’s different from India. It was a challenge, but it was also a rewarding learning experience.
8. And what’s one weird or unexpected thing you Googled while writing this book?
Haha, that’s an interesting question! I actually googled ‘difference between cowl neck and high neck sweaters’ and ended up writing about a furred sweater instead.
9. Why, why? Is it because they didn’t go well with your characters?
First, I added it as the weirdest thing I googled because I’m a woman, and most women probably know the difference. But I had to look it up (maybe I’m the weird one). And I didn’t include those types of sweaters because, yes, they didn’t suit the characters.
10. OK, now, for all the aspiring indie authors out there. What’s one piece of advice you wish someone had given you?
To all the aspiring authors, just do it! Write the damn book! I know the journey is tough, but trust me, it’s worth it.
